Have you seen BBC Series Riot Women?

At first, I avoided watching Riot Women, a series about a group of mid-life women who form a rock band. In my experience, I often find TV aimed at women irritating, condescending, boring, and lacking in depth. I was prepared to begin watching this series and, as usual, to switch off fairly quickly, finding myself annoyed at how women are portrayed, particularly around the ages of perimenopause and menopause. This was the experience I was expecting, but my sister encouraged me to give it a go. I found myself feeling invested in the characters and their experiences in being dismissed, derided, left with jobs others didn't want to do, and having their emotions invalidated. Whilst, as an introvert, I can't imagine wanting to join a rock band, seeing the women taking a chance, navigating both joyful and devastating events, and being assertive in not bowing to ridicule and the pressure to give up, made me feel less like I need to hide who I am, to look a certain way, or to feel that I am not acceptable to society now that I am older. It's not perfect, but if you haven't seen it, give it a try and see what you think!
